‘Tis the season of thankfulness, community and charity. As businesses across the country prepare for the busy Thanksgiving holiday, several Virginia wineries, distilleries and breweries are finding ways to express their gratitude for the support they’ve been given from local communities. Through donations from bottle proceeds, special events, community outreach and more, these five Virginia wine, beer and spirit businesses are demonstrating the importance of giving back.
Blue Sky Distillery – Smithfield
As the makers of DOG STAR Vodka, an exceptional “grain to glass” vodka distilled from 100% wheat, there’s no doubt Blue Sky Distillery has a passion for canines. In late October, Blue Sky announced that a portion of the proceeds earned from the sale of each bottle of DOG STAR Vodka will benefit the welfare of dogs throughout Virginia. DOG STAR Vodka can be purchased at both the Smithfield distillery store and a number Virginia ABC Stores.
Center of the Universe Brewing Co. – Ashland
For four years, Center of the Universe Brewing Co. has remained true to its mission of preserving the historic Byrd Theatre in Richmond, a 19th-century cinema located just south of Ashland in Commonwealth’s capital. Each fall, Center of the Universe Brewing Co. partners with the Byrd Theatre Foundation for their annual Big LeBYRDski event. All proceeds earned from the special screening of “The Big Lebowski” held at the Byrd Theatre benefits the conservation efforts of the historic landmark.
Chateau Morrisette — Floyd
Chateau Morrisette, affectionately known as The Dogs, not only strives to provide award-winning wines, but to help displaced dogs find a forever home. Chateau Morrisette partners with local Humane Societies and SPCAs to host Pet Adoption Days where winery visitors can sip vino and find their perfect furry companion.
Devils Backbone Brewing Company — Roseland
Since its opening in 2008, Devils Backbone Brewing Company has diligently provided support to the local Roseland community. The brewery’s newest philanthropic venture, the Heartland Initiative, seeks to provide aid to Virginia’s Heartland community through philanthropy, partnerships and sustainability efforts. The initiative’s five pillars— Neighbors, Family, Industry, Environment and Operations—will be supported through both monetary aid and the distribution of branded products by Devils Backbone.
Wasserhund Brewing Company — Virginia Beach
Wasserhund Brewing Company takes pride in crafting delicious German-style beers and giving back to the owners’ home community of Hampton Roads. Each month, beer lovers are asked to cast their vote for the local charity or organization they’d like to see as Wasserhund’s Cause of the Month. Each Cause of the Month receives 5 percent of the brewery’s total revenue for that month.
