Explore the bounty of the Blue Ridge at historic Mountain Lake Lodge
Nestled among the breathtaking peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains is one of the Commonwealth’s most sought after getaways, Mountain Lake Lodge. The historic resort is a haven for adventure-seekers, foodies and history buffs alike. Throughout summer breezes and winter chills, Mountain Lake Lodge offers one-of-a-kind experiences for guests all year round.
From January to March, snow lovers flock to Mountain Lake Lodge to enjoy sledding, ice skating and exploring the icy peaks along the property’s 22 miles of hiking trails. Come sundown, guests huddle around the fire pit just beyond the Main Stone Lodge to seek warmth and community.

Also in the early months is the first of seven Dirty Dancing Weekends. For three full days, Mountain Lake Lodge reimagines itself as Kellermans, the fictional resort featured in the popular 1980s flick, Dirty Dancing. “Our Dirty Dancing Weekends are completely immersive experiences,” says Mountain Lake Lodge President & CEO, Heidi Stone. “When guests arrive, they receive their welcome letter from Max Kellerman. Later that evening, everyone comes to dinner dressed as their favorite character. We see Baby’s, Johnny’s, Penny’s and even Shumachers.”
Other weekend attractions include dance lessons, movie trivia and a property-wide scavenger hunt. “We sell out about a year in advance. We are also excited to hear more in 2024 about the Dirty Dancing sequel that has been written by Jennifer Gray,” says Stone. “It’s important though that guests understand we are a [unique] rustic lodge that touts a lot of history beyond Dirty Dancing.”
Spring weather presents an excellent opportunity for visitors to explore its nearly 300-
year-old history. The on-site Adventure Center offers Guided Gator Tours that take guests throughout the property and revisits many historic sites and happenings. Tour-goers visit several amazing overlooks too, including Bald Knob, the highest peak in Giles County. Visitors can also traverse the property via the popular Treetop Adventure Course.
Guests can refuel at the lodge’s newest eatery, Salt Pond Pub, a walk-up hiker pub that encourages muddy boots and paws to dine al fresco. Other lodge restaurants include Harvest, a farm-to-table experience, and Stoney Creek Tavern. “We are a community farm partner, so we source and serve local food and beverages whenever possible,” says Stone.
The remainder of the spring and summer months boast two can’t-miss events including the BrewRidge beer festival and Fourth of July barbecue with a must-see fireworks show! Come fall and winter, guests prepare for the Lodge’s annual Thanksgiving Harvest and Magical Christmas Village and Marketplace, a month-long celebration of all things Christmas including carriage rides, Brunch with Santa and more.
