On March 30, Skjald Meadworks settled into Charlottesville as the city’s first-ever mead hall. The eccentric honey wine crafters commemorated their debut with belly dancers, music and endlessly flowing mead.
Skjald first opened in Altavista in 2013. Over the years, the brand gradually outgrew its Campbell County space and sought expansion north of Lynchburg. The team’s attraction to Charlottesville was largely influenced by the city’s trendy craft beverage scene and unwavering support of out-of-the-box thinkers. The meadery’s move not only allows for more visitors but also higher volumes of production and a greater capacity for experimental batches.
Currently filling the collection of Skjald bottles are an array of honey wines laced with seasonal fruits, herbs and spices. The saccharine mixtures are comprised of unique blends of lemon, bergamot, black cherry, ginger, lavender, vanilla and heavier savors like tobacco and molasses.
Skjald Meadworks is located at 1144 E. Market St., Charlottesville and is open Wednesday through Friday, 4 to 7 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, 2 to 6 p.m. Skjald meads are available for purchase at the Charlottesville shop as well as designated retailers throughout the Central Virginia region.
