Visiting Mecklenburg

By:
Visiting Mecklenburg

The State Parks, the Views and the Wine

Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure, an afternoon of browsing antiques or a chance to watch history unfold, Mecklenburg is the ultimate place for relaxation and rejuvenation. Once a rich tobacco region, Mecklenburg is sprawling with peaceful farms, which serve as the source for some true farm-to-table fare. You’ll find that many activities and attractions are centered near Kerr Lake (or Buggs Island, as the locals call it), and there’s lots to navigate among Mecklenburg’s six towns.

Where To Dine

The Lake House Restaurant: Cozy up in their beautifully-decorated dining room, or secure a spot on the porch to enjoy offerings such as pecan-crusted rainbow trout or crab ravioli. Be sure to pair with a glass of Virginia vino. 335 Virginia Ave., Clarksville. 434-374-4646

Where To Wine

Rosemont of Virginia: Sipping wine takes on a whole new feeling when done so at a prestigious, 450-acre historic estate. Rosemont’s 32,000 grape vines span 22 acres, allowing them to create premium estate-grown wines that are produced and bottled on site. You’re sure to leave home with a new favorite (or two) once sampling their grand selection, including pinot grigio, traminette, rose, syrah, merlot, cabernet franc, a port-style dessert wine and more. Rosemont is open for tastings and tours Mondays–Saturdays 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sundays 1–6 p.m. all year round. 1050 Blackridge Rd., LaCrosse. 434-636-9463

Where To Stay

Cooper’s Landing Inn & Traveler’s Tavern: Spend the weekend in Clarksville, Virginia’s only lakeside town. Cooper’s Landing offers elegantly-adorned guest rooms decorated with period antiques and upscale amenities like intimate fireplaces, jetted tubs and luxurious robes. Awaken to a heavenly selection of brunch options such as potato pancakes with smoked salmon, poached eggs and hollandaise, to be enjoyed on the patio, by the pool or in one of their adorable dining rooms. 801 Virginia Ave., Clarksville. 434-374-2866

Where To Play

Step back in time a bit to visit historic attractions including the Boyd Tavern, rich with Civil War history, and Prestwould Plantation, the most intact plantation surviving in the Southern Virginia and home to one of the largest collections of slave writings in the country. Stroll through the magnificent MacCallum Museum & Gardens in Chase City, featuring four unique gardens and a vast collection of historical statues. Discover the pristine water views by hiking, biking or horseback riding at Occoneechee State Park. The annual Clarksville Lake Country Wine Festival (held this year April 9) draws crowds to taste samples from 15 Virginia wineries while enjoying delicious food, live music and select artisans.
