Alexandria’s Port City Brewing Company is honoring the famed-NCAA basketball tournament with its first-ever Malt Madness event. The March Madness-inspired competition challenges brewery guests to go head-to-head at cornhole, giant yard pong and a variety of other yard games while enjoying some of Port City’s finest malt-forward brews.
From noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, beer lovers are invited to spend the day at Port City Brewing playing games, drinking beer, tasting cuisine from three local food trucks and cheering on the top four NCAA teams as they compete for their spot in the National Championship. From 4 to 9 p.m., the brewery’s Lighthouse Lounge will also host Metal Madness, a heavy metal jam sesh for non-gamers.
In addition to the recreational arcade games, giant Jenga, ladderball and darts, Port City will host six sessions of officiated team-based games of giant yard pong and cornhole, with prizes awarded to each winning team. Each team must register by March 30 and should consist of two to six players over the age of 21. Teams of two begin with a registration fee of $25 which includes two beers and two limited edition team bandanas designed by Port City’s own LeeZa Raney. Up to four additional team members may be added for $5 each. A total of eight teams may participate in each of the three sessions of giant yard pong and three sessions of cornhole held respectively at 12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
To further the competition, Port City challenges one person from each winning team to an arcade-style basketball shoot-off, where winners will receive a grand prize.
Making a special appearance at Malt Madness are Port City’s newest, seventh anniversary release, COLOSSAL 7, and several other brewery favorites. Reserved specifically for the event are kegs of the brewery’s fifth anniversary beer, COLOSSAL 5, an award-winning English-style ale, and Doppelbock, a malt-forward lager from Port City’s rotating lager series.
Also on tap will be traditional and cask-conditioned versions of the sweet and malty Metro Red, and Tartan Ale, a spring seasonal Scottish Ale boasting a roasted caramel malt flavor dovetailed by fruity accents and subtle tastes of brown bread and toffee. To cleanse the palate, Arlington’s Old Blue BBQ and Basic Burger food trucks will whip up delicious fare alongside the sugary treats of Leesburg’s Churrology.
To ensure the safety of Malt Madness attendees, Port City Brewing is offering a $5-off Lyft code to and from the brewery on the day of the event.
