In the midst of all that was happening in 2020, Richmond-based Virago Spirits was “quietly resting” the distillery’s newest release, Perseverance, in port casks. The second limited release of Virago’s high proof, finished rum series, Perseverance debuted Jan. 20, 2021 with only 100 bottles made of the exclusive release.
“2020 was a year of profound sacrifice, suffering, and struggle – a burden that has yet to abate in 2021,” according to a release from Virago. “In spite of common adversity, though, we are heartened by the continued desire to do what is right by our families, our communities, and one another. We persist. We persevere. We will overcome. This limited release honors that spirit.”
Perseverance, based on the distillery’s flagship Four-Port Rum, is finally ready to enjoy after resting an additional six months in freshly emptied ruby port casks sourced from Portugal’s Douro Valley. The 110 proof, 55% ABV rum is golden tawny in color with notes of allspice, clove and cracked pepper, while the finish highlights notes imbued by the cask’s prior occupant, ruby port wine.
Perseverance can be purchased online for $100 from the Virago Spirits online store.
